FRANCAIS LANGUE SECONDE-IMMERSION 8

This course is appropriate for students who were in the French Immersion program in their primary, elementary and intermediate years. The course is taught using only French and students are expected to communicate entirely in French. Students participate in a variety of activities, including the study of literary texts, to enable them to become stronger readers, writers and speakers of French, and to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Francophone culture.

INTRODUCTORY/BEGINNER GERMAN 11           (elective)  4 credits

Pre-requisite: Good work habits

Introductory German 11 is an accelerated introduction to German for students who have no prior experience with the language.

Focus Areas:

  • Language learning strategies
  • Communicating basic ideas and information both orally and in writing in real-life/travel situations, using basic past, present, and future time frames.
  • Pronunciation and intonation.
  • Understanding key information and supporting details in authentic print and audio texts (texts, emails, blogs, ads, websites, songs, recipes, conversations, presentations...).
  • German communities around the world.


GERMAN 11           (elective)  4 credits

Prerequisite: Introductory German 11 or teacher's permission based on prior knowledge of German

After successful completion of this course students receive second language credit necessary for admission to many post-secondary institutions across the country.

Focus Areas:

  • More complex vocabulary and language structures for communicating with growing fluency, orally and in writing, in past, present, and future time frames.
  • Exploring and understanding a variety of authentic print and audio texts (blogs, ads, articles, letters, songs, poems, websites, newscasts, presentations...).
  • Conversations and discussions on a growing variety of real-life topics.
  • Regional variations of German language and culture.

GERMAN 12           (elective)  4 credits

Prerequisite: German 11, or teacher's permission

Focus Areas:

  • Complex vocabulary, and sentence structures to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Multiple past, present, and future time frames, complex questions, sequencing events and expressing opinions and wishes.
  • Exploring, interpreting and responding to a wide variety of print and audio texts (blogs, ads, articles, letters, songs, poems, short stories, website, newscasts...).
  • Aspects of German culture (art, literature, music, famous German speakers).
